  • Sargi- It’s a ritual where a meal is prepared by the mother-in-law, usually consisting of fruits, milk, and dry fruits. Women eat this before the sun rises, to keep them energised throughout the day.
  • Karwa– It refers to a small earthen pot, in which water is filled. It holds special significance, as this water is later used by women to break their fast.
  • Thali Decoration – Women prepare a special plate (thali) adorned with a diya, sindoor, roli, chawal, sweets, and flowers.

Step 1: Set up the Pooja Area

Women gather in groups either in temples or in community centres. The space is decorated with brightly coloured rangolis or diyas to boost the positive energy. Women sit in large circles where they exchange their plates during the pooja.

Step 2: Lighting the Diya

Light a diya and place it at the center of the decorated pooja thali. This diya is kept burning throughout the ceremony and symbolizes protection from evil energies.

Step 3: Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

It is one of the most important steps in the Karwa Chauth puja vidhi. During the story, all women sit in a circle with their decorated thalis. The thalis are passed around in a clockwise manner while listening to the story.

Several stories emphasize the significance of Karwa Chauth vrat, but the tale of Queen Veervati is the most well-known. During the first year of her marriage, she wanted to observe the Karwa Chauth dedicatedly for well well-being of her husband. But Veervati became extremely weak due to hunger and almost fainted. Her brothers could not see their precious sister suffer.

Together, they came up with a plan to trick her. They created an illusion of the moon with the help of a mirror and a lamp. Believing that the moon had risen, she broke her fast. When she received the news that her husband was dead, she was devastated.

Later, she realised the reason for her husband’s death was that she had not offered Arghaya (water) to the moon, and once the rituals are fulfilled properly, her husband will come back to life.

The husband then gives water to his wife, marking the completion of the fast.
