Griha Pravesh ceremony with kalash, rangoli, and couple entering new home

You’ve finally bought your dream house, but one question remains: how are you going to enter your house? What will the housewarming party look like? In Hindu tradition, stepping into a new home is not just a celebration, it marks a sacred beginning. The Griha Pravesh decides the energy of the house and how it will affect you. In this guide, we cover the correct Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi and Griha Pravesh Muhurat in 2026.

Why do a Griha Pravesh Pooja?

Griha Pravesh literally translates to “entering the home”. In Hindu traditions, Griha Pravesh is a sacred ceremony that fills your house with positive energy. Performing this ritual ensures that only good energy enters your space, and decides what kind of vibrations your family will absorb while living there.

Griha Pravesh, when done right, charges your home with spiritual energy. Supporting your health, career, and relationships. The pooja is also a way to thank god for providing shelter and also seek protection from negative energies.

There are three types of Griha Pravesh ceremonies:

  1. Apoorva Griha Pravesh
It’s done before entering into a newly constructed home. It’s a very detailed and complicated ritual as you’re bringing life to a space that has been lifeless until now.

  2. Sapoorva Griha Pravesh
If you’ve recently done major renovations in your home, then this type of home opening ceremony helps to restore the energy. It’s done after a major remodelling of the house, like breaking walls, adding floors, and shifting rooms
  3. Dwandwah Griha Pravesh
When a home is abandoned or is unoccupied for a long time, it attracts negative energies. Performing this type of Grihapravesh helps to re-establish the family’s connection with the space.

Step-by-step Griha Pravesh Pooja Guide

Following the correct griha pravesh puja vidhi helps set the foundation for a peaceful and prosperous life in your new home.

Pre-preparations for the Pooja

Before you begin the Griha Pravesh Pooja, you need to clean the house and remove all construction tools. Decorate the main entrance of the house using fresh flowers, mango leaves, and a rangoli. Prepare the pooja essentials, including a kalash, coconut, rice, turmeric, lamps, and havan samagri

Step 1: Ganesh Puja

The first step of any ritual is invoking the divine blessings of Lord Ganesha. As he is the remover of all obstacles. Wash the deity’s feet and offer durva grass along with fresh flowers and laddoos.

Step 2: Kalash Puja

Kalash is symbolic of the five elements in nature. Fill a copper kalash with water mixed with raw rice. Tie 5-7 mango leaves around the rim of the kalash, forming a crown. Place a whole coconut on the top and tie a red or yellow cloth around it.

Chant mantras to invite the deities. It’s believed that Vishnu resides in the neck, Brahma in the base, and Lakshmi in the centre of the kalash

Step 3: Vastu Puja and Havan

According to Vastu, each house has a presiding deity, Vastu Purusha, who protects the house and its members. Find the brahmasthan of your house and draw a Vastu mandala using rice flour and turmeric powder. And offerings are made to the deities of the eight directions.

Step 4: Agni Havan and Navgraha Puja

An agni havan is performed to honour Agni (fire god), who acts as a messenger between the humans and divine forces. Followed by the Navgraha puja, where each planet is worshipped with specific offerings. Removing obstacles and challenges brought by planets in your life.

Step 5: Boiling Milk Ritual

Milk is boiled in a fresh vessel and intentionally allowed to overflow. It’s considered auspicious as it shows an overflow of abundance. Showing that you will experience an overflow in your life, and your kitchen will never be empty.

Step 6: Stepping into the House

There is also an order for family members to enter the new home. The eldest members of the family will enter first. If not, then the female member of the family will enter first, carrying the kalash. And make sure you step in with your right foot first.

Each step of the Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi plays an important role in building the spiritual foundation of your house. For Griha Pravesh in 2026, the most favourable periods are 19th to 25th February, early March, and 9th November onwards. Avoid inauspicious periods like adhik maas, eclipses, and sharadha paksha. When you perform this pooja room with devotion, it brings positive energy into your house and protects you from unexpected troubles.
